A Student’s Augmentative Communication System can be Designed to Meet the Communication Demands of Home and the Community

Teachers can help students who use an augmentative communication system in social situations by organizing school assembles and field trips. These scenarios provide practice for the unplanned opportunity to use communication at home and in the community. The augmentative communication devices can be programmed with specific questions for unfamiliar settings and experiences. It is beneficial if the words or phrases programmed were ones frequently used at home, for example: “Can I go outside” or “Where’s the dog”. Parents can work with the child to ensure communication with the augmentative communication system is encouraged with more people in more places.
