Thanks to the Texas Assistive Technology Network, we have an
easy to follow resource available to help implement assistive technology. The
module is available to all involved in the decision making and implementation
of assistive technology. It is important for the team to support the student’s
needs while implementing specific AT devices and strategies. There are three
key ideas that one should consider when implementing AT. The team should
understand the purpose and end goal for implementing the assistive technology.
The team should consider all information given to implement the most effective
AT to enhance student learning in the classroom. Once AT is implemented, the
team is not done their job. The team must continue to monitor the use of AT and
ensure it is working to help the student meet goals and objectives. Below is a
link to sample forms that help guide the team through the implementation
process. The form includes beneficial questions, for example “What supports or
cues does the student need to be successful” or “In what areas is change
expected when student uses AT for learning”, to help all involved in the
decision making process make it a successful journey for the user of the assistive
technology. This is a great form for
teachers to keep in their “tool box” when they are involved in an AT
implementation process. There is also a video available that highlights the use of AT in a classroom setting with specific student's needs. This helped me reflect on all the useful information I was reading and see it work in a real classroom.
