All skills learned in school must be practiced and repeated
in order for students to be successful. Augmentative communication skills are
no different. These skills must be practiced at home and in the community so
the skills are reinforced and students can generalize the skills in different
settings. Teachers should support family involvement in the process. Family
members should receive proper training to ensure the system is properly used at
home. If the family is able to use the technology and system it will increase the
success of communication. Augmentative communication with family is easier than
in the community because it will occur with people who are unfamiliar with the individual,
system, and rules of communication with an augmentative communication user. The more practice the child receives the better he/she will be with communicating to unfamiliar faces.
