AT Considerations in an IEP

According to IDEA, assistive technology consideration MUST be included in the IEP process. Assistive technology is considered as part of an individual’s education plan despite the disability to ensure the appropriate tools are being implemented when needed in order for the student to be successful in their least restrictive environment. There are three parts of the IEP that AT can be documented which include 1: AT as part of the Special Education program, 2: AT as a related service, or 3: AT as supplementary aids and services. AT as part of the special education program will be described in the annual goals and objectives. AT as a related service could include services used to assist a student such as walkers, wheel chairs, pointing devices, communication boards, etc. AT as a supplementary aid help students gain more independence when completing their daily tasks in their least restrictive environment such as a spell checker or voice to text device.
