Break cards are a teaching strategy used in the classroom
for students with many disabilities including autism. Students with autism and learning disabilities
frequently get frustrated in the classroom environment because of the
difficulty of learning and communicating. Break cards are used so students can “stop”
and take a couple of minutes to stop misbehavior, gather thoughts, or leave an
anxious situation. Break cards can be as simple as “I need a break”. Some break cards are more specific and have
specific tasks like “stretch it out” where the students stand and stretch to
take a break. Below are a few examples of break cards you can use in the
classroom. It is useful if you print break cards out, laminate them, and put
them on a ring so they are easily accessible to students.
