As part of a course, I was able to participate in the
Assistive Technology Internet Modules (ATIM), specifically AT for school age.
These modules were very informative and FREE if you signed up using an email
address. The first module I completed was the AT assessment process in the
school environment. This module walked you through the step by step process of
assigning the correct and appropriate assistive technology to students. The
most important thing I learned from the module is the first thing we must do
when assigning AT to students. Teachers, administrators, and team members must
identify the needs, strengths, and preferences of the student before choosing
the assistive technology device or service. Other items that need to be
considered are the environment where the technology will be used and the task
the student needs to accomplish. It is important to identify these items in
order to select the best and most appropriate assistive technology. This module
will help me in my own classroom when I am choosing AT for my students. The
module also introduced a valuable resource of the Tech Matrix which is a
database you can use to search over 400 products. This Tech Matrix will help me
find the most appropriate product to help assist my students.
