In addition to the AT assessment process module, I completed
the AT consideration in the IEP process through the Assistive Technology
Internet Modules. This module allowed the user to follow the specific part of
the IEP process which considers assistive technology for all students with
disabilities. The most important part of this module is to understand that it
is a requirement under IDEA that all students who have a learning disability
with an IEP need to be considered for AT devices and services in order to
receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in their least
restrictive environment (LEA). The IEP team considers the student’s strengths
and identifies the tasks that the student cannot complete on their own in order
to consider AT services and devices. The IEP team has three choices while
considering the AT services and devices in a student’s IEP. The team may
choose: 1) AT is not needed; 2) AT is needed and explain which device and
service is being used; or 3) AT is needed but the IEP team is unsure of what
devices or services are most appropriate. This module will help me in my professional
career when I am a part of the IEP team and need to consider assistive
technology for the students in my classroom or students on my caseload.
