The last module I completed through the Assistive Technology
Internet Modules, AT for School Age, was Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR).
This module focused on the resources available to students with physical and
learning disabilities, brain damage, autism, or speech disorders such as
dysarthria that allows speech-to-text communication. The module listed numerous
resources available at inexpensive costs that assist students and individuals
in communicating needs, delivering content, or completing commands such as
shutting down the computer or commands on house hold appliances. These
resources allow students to focus on the content rather than struggle with
mechanics and grammar. These devices have changed over the years and have
improved their speech recognition to make it easier and more effective for the
users. Some of these resources include but
are not limited to SIRI on the apple Iphone, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Dragon
Dictate, Speak Q, and Windows 7 and 8- built in voice recognition.
